IS BAKING SODA A BASE?
Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate with chemical formula NaHCO3 is a weak base / alkaline with pH 8.2. Washing soda or Sodium carbonate Na2CO3 (also known as soda ash), is much stronger base / alkaline with pH 11.6.
IS BAKING SODA A SALT?
The reaction between Na2CO3, the base, and some acid, H+ gives us baking soda or sodium bicarbonate, with chemical formula NaHCO3. By definition baking soda is a salt, because the product of an acid and base is a salt. Baking soda can further react with an acit to give H2CO3.
